A parent’s guide to navigating naughty kids at a photoshoot
You see other families with beautiful images of themselves on the wall and you want the same for your family BUT, you think that’s impossible for your family because your kid(s) are naughty/crazy/demanding?? And all you can think of is how painful and overwhelming the experience is going to be, desperately trying to get little Johnny to smile for the camera.
Here are my 10 top tips for not only getting beautiful images of your children but also ENJOYING the experience - say WHAT????
It’s so normal for kids to feel excited or restless during a photoshoot, especially when surrounded by new faces and unfamiliar settings. Stay calm and patient to help your child feel secure, happy and relaxed. If you’re stressed, then they will be too!
Embrace who your child is: Every child will express themselves differently and we want to capture that, not hide it. Sometimes imperfections and spontaneity can lead to some of the most heartwarming and genuine photos that you will treasure for years to come.
Share what your children are like with me - are they usually shy or take a while to warm up, what are their interests, and what makes them smile? We want your child to feel comfortable with me and my camera. Sometimes I advise people to show kids my photo and tell them to say to their kids that they are meeting a friend so that they feel secure straight away.
Encourage playfulness - we want to see them express themselves free and have some fun! And that goes for parents too - show your kids your playful side and everyone will have fun and the smiles and laughter will come naturally! I can guarantee this will mean you will LOVE your photoshoot experience.
5. Praise your child - that will boost their confidence in what they are doing and encourage them to keep going.
6. Give them your full attention, and they will love every second.
7. No tears policy. Don’t force kids to smile - we want genuine happiness! It’s so hard to come back from a child who has been yelled at
8. If they do lose interest or get upset - give them some space. Distract them with something like sniffing a flower, watching the clouds move, or finding a rock.
9. Bribe if you need to - no judgement here!
10. Bring the right clothing - it does get cooler once the sun has set - make sure they are not cold but also - if we are shooting at the beach and your child won’t stop till his in the water - you’ll need a towel and a change of clothes!
Remember that the photoshoot is not just about the final images but also about the journey of creating beautiful memories with your child. Cherish each moment spent together, laugh at the unexpected twists and turns, and savour the bond shared between you and your little one during this special time. Trust in the process, be in the moment, and treasure the memories that will last a lifetime.
