What to wear for your extended family photoshoot and other tips
I’ve done a LOT of extended family photoshoots! Here’s some tips to make the day go really well:
CLOTHING:
So we want to co-ordinate, not match. Choose a colour palette that complements each other rather than identical outfits. 3-4 colours is a good number. This will add visual interest to the photos and allow each family member to showcase their individual style.
Location can have a big impact too: If the shoot is taking place outdoors in a natural setting, go for earthy tones and soft colours that will blend well with the surroundings. For beach sessions, I love pastel colours. City sessions you might go brighter colours. Also think about the season: make sure everyone is nice and warm!
DO’S:
Clothes you feel your best that are comfy - and comfy shoes as well. (On the beach- no shoes!)
Vary textures and fabrics: think textured knits or chunky jumpers.
Accessories - jewellery, scarfs, bow ties for little boys, beanies in the winter.
Dark, brighter colours only as accents
I love having ladies in long skirts and dresses, or little girls in tutus for movement.
DON’TS:
No clothing with logos or words on it - it’s distracting and dates your photos.
No glitter, sequins, neon or other extras that reflect light.
No small stripes/checkered print. Cameras do not like them.
Keep pure white and solid black to a minimum and if you do wear them, then make sure they are textured rather than flat. eg waffle, ribbed. Cream is a great alternative to white.
OTHER TIPS:
Bring non-messy snacks for the kids - there are always breaks and hungry children are not happy children!
If you have people who can’t stand for a long time - consider bringing a camp chair or two (always talk to me about this because I can suggest places that are close to parking etc)
Have one person with a list of all the different combinations of photos you want - the time goes fast and there’s a lot of distraction, so we want to make sure nothing is missed.
Bring Props: an ‘80’ sign, a cake (can you tell I get a lot of families celebrating birthdays!), something that is meaningful or even your pet!
Bribery for young kids - absolutely if needed! Don’t make a big deal if Johnny has a meltdown, we simply move on and then come back to photos with him.
Be ‘normal’ - Tell everyone to act like themselves! Encourage everyone beforehand to interact naturally and share jokes - these candid shots often turn out to be some of the most cherished and memorable images because they show genuine emotions and expressions.
Extended family photoshoots are often a great way to spend some quality time with your WHOLE family so enjoy it! And trust me when I tell you that you’ve made GRANDMA’S DAY, MONTH AND YEAR with these precious memories!
